On July 2, 1923, four Sisters of St. Joseph’s opened St. Joseph’s Hospital at 160 Salter Street, Winnipeg.
In July 1953, the hospital was renovated to meet the needs of a Residence for Senior Citizens. In 1973,
St. Joseph’s Residence was renovated and licensed as a Personal Care Home by the Government of
Manitoba. Early in 1975, St. Joseph’s Residence was authorized by Manitoba Health to start the
construction of a new building to house the elderly and, in May 1980, sixty-nine residents were moved
from the Residence at 160 Salter Street to their new home on Leila Avenue next to Seven Oaks Hospital.
In March 1990, the Sisters of St. Joseph transferred the ownership of the residence to the Sisters of
St. Benedict who assumed governance responsibility until June 20, 2003, at which time the ownership,
governance and sponsorship of St. Joseph’s Residence were transferred to the Catholic Health
Corporation of Manitoba.
